> Choose what to keep, change, decline, or leave undecided.

A holiday or anniversary can arrive with invitations, traditions, and other people's expectations. You may know what you want, feel torn, or prefer not to make a plan yet. Begin with the choices that are yours to make.

## Sort the day into parts

Instead of deciding whether you can manage “the holiday,” consider the meal, travel, gathering, ritual, and time afterward separately. You might join one part and skip another. If other people depend on your decision, tell them what you can confirm and what remains uncertain.

## Choose a small plan and an exit

“I would like to come for lunch, but I may leave before the evening.”

“I am not hosting this year. Please make your plans without waiting for me.”

“I do not know yet whether I want to mark the date. Can I let you know next week?”

Arrange transport or a way to leave where possible. You do not have to explain a change of plan to every guest.

## Discuss remembrance, not just logistics

Someone may want to mention the person who died while another fears upsetting the room. Ask rather than guess: “Would you like us to say their name or include something they enjoyed?” A photograph, story, or quiet moment can be optional. Do not require everyone to speak.

## Leave room for an ordinary day

You can mark the date privately, on another day, or not at all. An anniversary is not a test of love. If you are supporting someone, a short message with no demand for a reply can leave the choice with them: “Thinking of you today. No need to respond.”
