Finding support
Questions to ask about counselling, peer groups, and other options.
Different kinds of help do different things
You might be looking for a person to talk to, professional care, practical assistance, or other people with a similar experience. You can ask what a service actually offers before deciding whether it suits you.
This publication does not provide counselling or emergency response. For immediate danger, contact local emergency services. For urgent emotional support, use an appropriate crisis service in your country.
Questions you can ask
- Who runs the service, and what qualifications or training do they have?
- Is this therapy, peer support, a moderated group, or an information service?
- What does it cost, and are there waiting times or eligibility limits?
- What privacy rules apply? Can I listen without sharing my story?
- What happens if I need help outside the service’s scope?
